Rigid Permeable Drain Pipe

SIGMA rigid permeable drain pipe — also called a plastic blind ditch, blind drain or curved-mesh PE permeable pipe — is a filament-wound polyethylene permeable core, often wrapped with a nonwoven geotextile filter. The upper roughly two-thirds of the pipe is open (permeable) for rapid groundwater intake, while the lower third is closed to prevent secondary leakage back into the soil. It is used for subsurface drainage, retaining-wall back drainage, sports-field and road-base drainage.

What a rigid permeable drain pipe is

A rigid permeable drain pipe (plastic blind ditch) is a filament-wound PE permeable core that takes in groundwater through its open mesh. The upper ~2/3 of the pipe is perforated and permeable for fast intake, while the closed lower ~1/3 stops water leaking back into the soil — preventing the secondary leakage that loosens the surrounding ground. Often wrapped with a nonwoven geotextile filter, it works as a rigid alternative to a flexible perforated land drainage pipe.

Where it is used

This rigid perforated pipe is used for subsurface drainage, retaining-wall back drainage, sports-field and road-base drainage. It drains water away quickly to avoid soil erosion, adapts to a wide temperature range, and resists ageing and chemicals for a long service life. Because it is lightweight it is easy to transport and install on site. For a flexible double-wall alternative see our corrugated drainage pipe, and for behind-wall flow it pairs with a geonet drainage layer.

Specification and sizing

There is no single public or statutory standard (AASHTO, ASTM or GB) that governs this filament-wound blind-ditch permeable pipe; products are made to manufacturer specifications and may be supplied as national-standard or non-standard grades. Diameter, open ratio, compressive strength and discharge capacity are therefore product-specific — contact us with your project flow and depth and we will return SIGMA datasheet values with the test method named for each figure.

Rigid permeable pipe vs flexible perforated drainage pipe

A conventional perforated drainage pipe — a slotted land drainage pipe or perforated PVC pipe — relies on small holes or slots that can clog over time. This filament-wound rigid permeable pipe is open across its whole upper face like a fine mesh, so it takes in groundwater faster and is less prone to blocking than a hole-and-slot perforated pipe. As a rigid perforated drain pipe it keeps its shape under backfill where a flexible land-drain coil might deform, and an optional geotextile wrap turns it into a self-filtering drain.

Where it is used and how it installs

Per the source application list this rigid permeable pipe is used in railway and highway construction, airport runways, golf courses, football fields and large lawns, landscaping, landfills, slope and retaining-wall drainage, and tunnels — anywhere a large-scale drainage project must remove groundwater quickly. It installs like any land drain: lay it in a gravel-filled trench (optionally geotextile-wrapped), with the closed base down and the permeable face up, then connect to an outfall or a corrugated drainage pipe collector. As a perforated drain pipe for a retaining wall it runs along the footing to relieve back-of-wall water pressure.

  • No single public/statutory standard (e.g. AASHTO/ASTM/GB) was found that governs this filament-wound "blind ditch" permeable pipe; products are made to manufacturer specifications, and may be "national-standard" or "non-standard" grades in the Chinese market.

Frequently asked questions

Why is only the top of the pipe perforated?

The upper roughly two-thirds is open so groundwater enters quickly, while the lower third is left closed. The closed base prevents secondary leakage — water that has been collected cannot seep back out into the surrounding soil, which keeps the ground stable and speeds drainage.

Is the rigid permeable drain pipe wrapped with a filter?

It can be. The PE permeable core is optionally wrapped with a nonwoven geotextile filter that keeps soil fines out while letting water through. Tell us the soil type and whether a wrapped or unwrapped pipe suits your project.

What standard does this pipe meet?

No single public or statutory standard (AASHTO, ASTM or GB) governs this filament-wound blind-ditch permeable pipe; it is made to manufacturer specification and may be supplied as a national-standard or non-standard grade. We will provide SIGMA datasheet values for diameter, compressive strength and discharge, each with its test method, for your project.

Where is a rigid permeable drain pipe used?

It is used for subsurface groundwater drainage, retaining-wall back drainage, sports-field and turf drainage, and road-base or slope drainage where draining water quickly helps avoid soil erosion. Per the source application list it also suits railway and highway construction, airport runways, golf courses, football fields and large lawns, landscaping, landfills and tunnels — large-scale drainage projects. Being lightweight, it is easy to transport and install.

How is the rigid permeable pipe different from a slotted or perforated PVC pipe?

A slotted land drainage pipe or perforated PVC pipe drains through discrete holes or slots that can silt up. This filament-wound permeable pipe is open across its whole upper face, so it takes in groundwater faster and is less prone to clogging, while staying rigid under backfill. With a geotextile wrap it filters soil fines like a sock-wrapped drain tile.

How is the pipe installed for a French drain or retaining wall?

Lay it in a gravel-filled trench with the closed base down and the permeable face up, optionally wrapped in a nonwoven geotextile, then run it to an outfall or a collector pipe. Behind a retaining wall it sits along the footing to relieve hydrostatic pressure. The lightweight pipe is easy to handle and cut to length on site.

Can you supply project sizes, pricing and overseas shipping?

Yes. Because there is no single public standard, diameter, open ratio and discharge are quoted from SIGMA datasheet for your project; send us the design flow, trench depth and quantity and we will confirm the model, price, minimum order and sea-freight packing. The pipe is light and coils or cuts compactly for container loading.
