PP Geotextile

SIGMA PP geotextile is a polypropylene geotextile built to AASHTO M288. The needle-punched non woven polypropylene geotextile is made from PP staple fiber — opened, carded, web-laid and needle-punched into a felt-like fabric for filtration, separation, drainage and protection, with high elongation that adapts to uneven and irregular bases. For load-spreading and reinforcement we also supply woven polypropylene geotextile. Anti-aging, UV-resistant and resistant to soil chemicals, fuels and rot, this PP geotextile is graded by installation survivability (Class 1–3) and shipped direct from our factory.

Polypropylene geotextile to AASHTO M288

SIGMA PP geotextile is a polypropylene geotextile produced from polypropylene staple fiber that is opened, carded, web-laid and needle-punched into a non woven polypropylene geotextile fabric. The fabric is built to the AASHTO M288 standard, which grades a geotextile by installation survivability — Class 1 (most severe), Class 2 (default) and Class 3. The non woven polypropylene geotextile is anti-aging with very high resistance to ultraviolet radiation, so it is not easily degraded, and it resists soil chemicals, gasoline and diesel as well as rot.

How the needle-punched PP nonwoven is made

Production follows the classic staple-fiber nonwoven route: the polypropylene fiber is opened and carded into a uniform web, the web is laid and normalised, and the layers are then mechanically bonded by needle-punching — thousands of barbed needles entangling the fibers into a thick, felt-like sheet with no chemical binder. This mechanical bond is what gives the pp nonwoven geotextile its three-dimensional pore structure, its high elongation, and its ability to be specified as a single fabric across filtration, separation, drainage and protection roles.

Filtration, drainage, separation and protection

The needle-punched structure gives this pp nonwoven geotextile high flat (in-plane) drainage and vertical permeability, so it filters water while holding back soil fines — making it an effective polypropylene non woven filter fabric around French drains, in subsurface drainage blankets, and as a cushion / protection layer over and under geomembrane liners. With high elongation under stress it adapts to uneven and irregular bases without tearing, which suits railway subgrade reinforcement, highway pavement maintenance, dyke protection and hydraulic-structure isolation.

Woven PP for stabilization and reinforcement

Where the job is load-spreading and reinforcement rather than filtration, a woven polypropylene geotextile (a pp woven geotextile) gives low elongation and high tensile strength — used as a polypropylene black woven stabilization underlayment beneath aggregate on soft subgrade, haul roads and storage yards. See our woven geotextile range and our high-tensile polyester-PP woven geotextile for reinforcement grades. For filtration and protection the non woven polypropylene geotextile fabric is the right choice — compare it with our broader nonwoven geotextile for staple-fiber PET / PP grades.

Installation and overlap

A non woven polypropylene geotextile is rolled out over a prepared subgrade with the fabric carried up to formation level and overlapped at the joints; on firm ground a 300 mm overlap is common, increasing to 0.6–1 m or sewn seams on soft or wet soils so the fabric stays continuous under traffic. Backfill is end-tipped and spread without trafficking the bare fabric, and exposed edges should be covered promptly because, although the PP is UV-stabilised, prolonged exposure reduces strength. Tell us the soil, function and site severity and we will recommend the right survivability class and overlap.

Choosing a class — quality and supply

AASHTO M288 specifies the fabric by survivability Class (1, 2 or 3) rather than by weight: Class 2 is the default, Class 1 covers severe placement over coarse angular stone, and Class 3 suits mild conditions. As a manufacturer we control the resin and the needle-punch line in-house, so every roll of polypropylene geotextile is produced to a consistent mass per unit area and tested to the M288 minimums before it ships direct from our factory. Send us the class or target gsm, construction (woven or nonwoven), roll width and destination port for a same-day quote.

Specifications

PP Geotextile (needle-punched nonwoven polypropylene) — AASHTO M288 minimum average roll values (MARV), elongation ≥50%.

  • Class 2 is the default classification in the absence of site-specific information. Sewn seam strength must be ≥90% of grab strength.
  • Filtration / hydraulic (by soil gradation, ASTM D4491 permittivity): soil <15% passing 0.075 mm → min. 0.5 sec⁻¹; soil 15–50% → min. 0.2 sec⁻¹; soil >50% → min. 0.1 sec⁻¹.
  • Apparent Opening Size (AOS, max. avg., ASTM D4751): soil <15% passing 0.075 mm → 0.43 mm; 15–50% → 0.25 mm; >50% → 0.22 mm. UV stability (ASTM D4355): 50% retained after 500 hr.
  • Woven PP grades follow the AASHTO M288 elongation <50% column (see Woven Geotextile). Mass per unit area (ASTM D5261) is commercial; AASHTO M288 governs by survivability class, not by mass.
  • Per-weight (gsm) strength values are manufacturer datasheet figures: On request. Roll width and length are order-specific and are not governed by AASHTO M288 — contact us for stock sizes.

Frequently asked questions

What standard is your PP geotextile made to?

Our polypropylene geotextile is manufactured to AASHTO M288, the standard specification for geosynthetics. AASHTO M288 grades the fabric by installation survivability — Class 1 (most severe), Class 2 (default) and Class 3 — with minimum average roll values for grab, sewn seam, trapezoid tear and CBR puncture strength, plus permittivity and AOS set by the soil gradation for filtration.

Is PP geotextile woven or nonwoven?

We supply both. The needle-punched non woven polypropylene geotextile is used for filtration, separation, drainage and protection because of its high permittivity and high elongation. A woven polypropylene geotextile (pp woven geotextile) has low elongation and high tensile strength and is used for stabilization and reinforcement. Tell us the function and we will recommend the right construction.

Can PP geotextile be used as a filter fabric for a French drain?

Yes — the needle-punched pp nonwoven geotextile works well as a polypropylene non woven filter fabric around a French drain. Its high permittivity lets water pass while the fabric filters out soil fines and prevents clogging. The required permittivity and apparent opening size are selected from the surrounding soil gradation per AASHTO M288.

What is PP geotextile resistant to?

Polypropylene geotextile is anti-aging with very high resistance to ultraviolet radiation, so it is not easily degraded. It also resists corrosion from soil chemicals, gasoline and diesel, and is rot- and mildew-resistant — and it offers high creep resistance for long-term reinforcement and separation.

What weights (gsm) are available?

Non woven polypropylene geotextile is supplied across the usual commercial range of weights, from light separation fabrics up to heavy protection and cushion grades. AASHTO M288 governs by survivability class rather than by mass per unit area, so we match the mass to the required class and function. Tell us the target gsm or the class and we will confirm the grade and per-weight strength figures, which are manufacturer datasheet values available on request.

What is the minimum order quantity?

As the manufacturer we run economic batches, so minimum order quantity depends on the weight and width you need rather than a fixed roll count; standard commercial grades carry a low MOQ while custom widths or colours are made to order. Send us the class or gsm, construction, roll width and total area and we will confirm the MOQ and lead time with the quote.

What roll widths and lengths do you supply?

Roll width and length are order-specific and are not governed by AASHTO M288. We supply common stock widths and can slit or produce custom widths and lengths to suit the site and shipping. Contact us with your required dimensions and we will confirm stock sizes and any made-to-order options.

How much does PP geotextile cost?

PP geotextile price depends mainly on the weight (gsm) / survivability class, woven or nonwoven construction, roll width and order volume. As a manufacturer we quote ex-works per square metre or per roll; send us the class or gsm, construction, total area and destination port and we will return a polypropylene geotextile price the same business day.
