Geotextile vs geomembrane: what is the difference
Geomembrane vs geotextile comes down to one thing: a geotextile is permeable and filters or reinforces soil; a geomembrane is impermeable and stops water. When you need each, and when you need both.
Permeable vs impermeable
The whole geomembrane vs geotextile question is about water. A geotextile is permeable — it lets water through while filtering, separating or reinforcing soil. A geomembrane is an impermeable plastic sheet whose entire purpose is to stop water — for ponds, landfills, canals and tanks. Same 'geo-' prefix, opposite behaviour.
Different jobs
Reach for a geotextile when you need filtration, drainage, separation between soil layers, or tensile reinforcement of weak ground. Reach for a geomembrane when you need containment — holding water in a reservoir, canal lining with geomembrane to stop seepage losses, or keeping leachate out of the ground. They solve opposite problems, so swapping one for the other is how a pond ends up empty or a drain ends up blocked.
When you need both
In most lined structures they work as a pair: a non-woven geotextile cushion goes under the geomembrane to take the puncture load off subgrade stones, and sometimes a second layer goes on top against UV, traffic or ballast. The geotextile protects and drains; the geomembrane seals. Skip the cushion to save money and you are betting the liner against every stone in the bed.
One question to pick
Does the layer need to let water through, or keep water out? Through → geotextile. Out → geomembrane. Tell us the application and we supply the matched system, weld rod and accessories included.
Frequently asked questions
Is a geotextile waterproof?
No. Geotextile is permeable by design — it filters and drains rather than blocking water. For waterproofing you need a geomembrane.
Can a geotextile replace a geomembrane in a pond?
No. A pond liner has to be impermeable, so it needs a geomembrane. A geotextile only goes alongside it as a protective cushion or filter layer.
