A SIGMA floating cover is a geomembrane floating cover fabricated from HDPE or RPE membrane and floated on the water or process surface. As a popular solution for odor containment and an integral component of low-rate anaerobic digestion systems, it offers superior seam strength under elevated-temperature constant loading — essential where personnel must walk on the cover — together with low thermal expansion-contraction for simple operation and maintenance. Its broad chemical resistance and flexible nature make the membrane ideal for floating cover construction. Built to order as a single fabricated panel sized to the basin.
Floating covers manufactured from geomembranes are a popular solution to odor containment and an integral component of low-rate anaerobic digestion systems. The SIGMA floating cover offers superior seam strength under elevated-temperature constant loading — essential where personnel must walk on the cover — while its low thermal expansion-contraction properties make operation and maintenance simple. The broad chemical resistance and flexible nature of the membrane make it the ideal material for floating cover construction.
A floating cover is fundamentally an HDPE geomembrane (or RPE) product, so it draws on the same impermeable, weather-resistant and chemically resistant membrane used across our geomembrane range. Each cover is fabricated to order — there is no off-the-shelf size — and the finished dimensions are cut and seamed to the surface area and shape of your reservoir, lagoon or digester.
Buyers specify a floating cover for odor containment, evaporation control and biogas capture over lagoons, process basins and water reservoirs. A floating reservoir liner cover pairs the cover with a lined basin for sealed raw or potable water storage, and the same membrane serves as floating fish pond covers in aquaculture. The membrane is also used for floating covers for plants and vegetables in protected growing, where it tempers exposure and reduces evaporation from the bed below. For the basin liner that sits beneath the cover, see our pond liner, and browse related items under protective products.
A floating cover is built to drain. In a defined-sump design the membrane is weighted so rain collects in set low points and is pumped off; in a tensioned design floats and tie-downs keep the cover taut so water runs to the edge. Both keep the sheet flat on the surface, prevent ponding, and let trapped gas vent or be drawn off for biogas capture, with the right layout chosen for the basin shape, the climate and any foot-traffic duty. Because every cover is one fabricated panel, most work is done in the factory: the HDPE or RPE sheet is cut to plan and seamed into a single cover, folded for shipping, then floated out and trimmed to the basin on site. A damaged area is patched in place with geomembrane glue or welded rather than replacing the whole cover.
Compared with floating ball blankets or rigid lids, a single-panel geomembrane floating cover gives continuous, gap-free coverage with no joints for odor or gas to escape, and it scales to large irregular basins that rigid covers cannot span. It is lighter to ship and faster to deploy than a structural cover, and it draws on the same proven HDPE geomembrane chemistry used for containment liners. Send the surface area, the shape and the duty (odor, evaporation or biogas) and we will quote the right cover and the matching basin liner together.
Floating Cover — finished-product parameters. There is no public statutory standard for a fabricated floating cover; values are project/manufacturer-specific and to be supplied by SIGMA.

A floating cover is used for odor containment, evaporation control and biogas capture over lagoons, process basins, digesters and water reservoirs. It floats on the surface to seal off odors and gases, cut evaporation losses, or capture biogas in low-rate anaerobic digestion systems.
A floating cover is fabricated from geomembrane — typically HDPE or RPE — so it shares the impermeable, chemically resistant and weather-resistant properties of our geomembrane liners. The flexible membrane and high seam strength make it suitable for covers that personnel may need to walk on.
No. Each floating cover is custom-fabricated as a single panel cut and seamed to the surface area and shape of your basin, lagoon or reservoir. Send us the dimensions and the application (odor, evaporation or biogas) and we will fabricate the cover to fit.
Often yes. For reservoirs and lagoons the floating cover sits over a lined basin, so the cover and the pond liner together form a sealed, impermeable enclosure. We can supply both the floating cover and the matching geomembrane basin liner for the project.
Price depends on the membrane (HDPE or RPE), the thickness, the surface area to be covered and the float, sump and anchoring details, so a floating cover is quoted per project rather than per metre. Send us the basin dimensions, the duty and your location and we will price the fabricated cover; published parameters are issued on the SIGMA datasheet on request.
A floating cover is custom-fabricated to order, so there is no fixed catalogue minimum — the order is the cover for your basin. Lead time depends on the surface area and the fabrication queue; tell us the target site date with the dimensions and we will confirm a schedule with the quotation.
Yes. The finished cover is fabricated as a single panel, then folded and rolled for shipping, so even a large reservoir floating cover packs into a manageable consignment for sea freight. We deploy it across the surface and trim it to the basin on site after delivery.
