HDPE vs PVC geomembrane: which pond liner should you use

HDPE vs PVC geomembrane for ponds and containment: chemical resistance, UV life, flexibility and cost compared — plus where EPDM fits — so you pick the liner that survives your exposure.

Two liners, two temperaments

Among the common types of geomembrane — HDPE, LLDPE, PVC and EPDM — two dominate pond and containment work, and they pull in opposite directions. HDPE geomembrane is the workhorse for large containment: excellent chemical and UV resistance, a long exposed service life, but a stiff sheet that fights you around tight shapes. PVC geomembrane is softer and folds easily into sumps and corners, but it generally needs covering for UV protection and shrugs off fewer chemicals. Ask 'which pond liner is best' and the honest answer is: it depends on whether the liner sits exposed and what it holds.

Chemical and UV resistance

For aggressive leachate, brines and years of direct sun, HDPE wins clearly — it is the standard for landfills, mining ponds and exposed reservoirs. PVC handles clean-water duties well but really wants a soil or water cover to reach a long life. If the liner will sit bare for years, choose HDPE and don't overthink it.

Flexibility, welding and cost — and where EPDM fits

PVC conforms to tanks, sumps and corners and welds with solvent or hot air. HDPE welds by hot-wedge or extrusion and gives very strong seams over long runs. On material price the two are close grade-for-grade, but HDPE's longer exposed life usually wins on lifetime cost for big open ponds. People also ask EPDM vs HDPE pond liner: EPDM rubber is the flexible, easy-to-fit choice for small ornamental and koi ponds, but for large or chemically loaded containment HDPE outlasts it and costs far less per square metre at scale.

Which to choose

HDPE for exposed ponds, reservoirs, landfills and chemical containment. PVC for covered, complex-shaped or smaller structures where flexibility rules. EPDM for small garden and koi ponds. Send the application, exposure and chemistry and we will call the material and thickness.

Frequently asked questions

Is HDPE or PVC better for an exposed pond?

HDPE. Its UV and chemical resistance let it sit exposed for many years, while PVC normally needs a soil or water cover to last.

EPDM vs HDPE pond liner — which is better?

EPDM is easier to fit in small ornamental ponds; HDPE wins on chemical resistance, exposed life and cost per m² on large ponds and containment.
